Millions saw the apple fall, but Newton asked why. — Bernard Baruch From the Golden ratio, present in all nature, to the Burj Khalifa towering 830m over the Dubai skyline, and from counting change at the cash register, to budgeting out your trip. Mathematics is everywhere. Almost all careers use skills learned in Mathematics on a daily basis. It’s no surprise that almost all students study some level of maths for the HSC, whether it be Standard, Advanced, Extension 1 or Extension 2 Mathematics. As a senior student, you may have many questions about HSC Maths. What level of Maths should I take? Is Extension 2 Mathematics worth it? How do I improve my marks? And most commonly, how do I stop making careless mistakes? At Marquis Education, we understand the HSC Mathematics syllabus and journey in microscopic detail. We, too, had asked those countless questions about HSC Maths. As Educators at Marquis, we believe in supporting students to achieve their best results. So, here are our insider tips on choosing which level of Maths to study at, improving marks, and stop making those careless errors. Choosing your Maths level for the HSC Our quick tips on selecting your Math level: Research and understand all the available Math levels Consider the importance of scaling Mathematics Extension courses are the highest scaling subjects in the entire HSC The first question you may ask yourself is: “What level of Maths should I study?” When making your choice, you should take into account your own Mathematical confidence, interest, abilities, as well as the subject’s scaling. Mathematical Ability Each Mathematics subject requires different levels of Mathematical competency and ability. We have created a flowchart to show a brief overview of the different Math levels that can be chosen in Year 11 and Year 12.

That means collaborating with a dream team of the brightest minds in education, including seasoned PhD qualified industry experts, NESA accredited teachers, English scholars and 1st in NSW achievers. Together, we have created leading-edge course programs by developing rich content and building innovative technology to deliver this content seamlessly to our students in online and blended classrooms. When students experience the atmosphere of creativity, compassion and challenge, they know that Marquis is not like any other tutoring company – we are an integral part of their team, working together towards their BIG dreams and helping them achieve exceptional results throughout their secondary education and the HSC. Our students’ learning, personal progress, and results are as important to us as their happiness, mental health, and engagement in their growth and development. Our personalised and holistic approach to delivering high-quality content in the most conducive and aspirational learning environment is exactly why we are one of the fastest-growing learning communities within Australia. The Purpose of Transformative Education Marquis course programs are designed to help students achieve their personal best. Whatever that means for them. At Marquis, our English and Maths programs are deeply integrated with the key outcomes of the NESA school syllabus, but it may feel challenging at first, as it is one term ahead of most schools. We firmly believe that learning ahead provides a second time learning advantage at school. Essentially, it is meant to be slightly challenging when students learn it with Marquis because it’s their first moment of discovery. By design, we educate ahead of school to help our students build their confidence, work on areas of weakness and have an edge amongst their peers to achieve excellence at school and in their final exams. Marquis, Theory Workbooks are designed to complement the students learning at school and help them gain confidence in their academic skills. Our yearly course programs incorporate all learning outcomes of English and Maths within the National and NSW Curriculum and deliver it in condensed and comprehensive lessons to inspire learning both in class and in your own time. Your assigned Educator will help guide you through rich content and a workbook in each lesson and structure the delivery of content by tailoring it to your personal goals and learning needs. Not everyone learns at the same rate. Therefore, we capture weekly analytics of each pupil through formative assessments , which allows their Educator to address their individual challenges and aptitude and give them an unparalleled advantage to thrive and succeed. Through our bespoke learning scheme, you will learn all topics, modules, and concepts mapped to the NESA syllabus, and your Educator will focus on maximising your results. The accompanying Tutorial and Homework tasks are designed to take your independent investigation and study of texts into greater depth in your own time. We encourage students always to be curious and personally engage with their subject matter to master creative and critical writing skills. Aim Higher and Dream Bigger We want each student to know that it is vital to dream BIG dreams and work hard towards reaching your dreams, even when times are difficult and your efforts seem futile. You can achieve all of your dreams through knowledge and know that you can only gain knowledge through education. Work both smart and hard in school and achieve the greatest marks you can. Excellent results are the key to great success. Remember that success starts with you, and it can start right now. Only YOU have to believe that you can succeed, believe that you can be whatever your heart desires and mind can conceive, and you will have it. Don’t ever let anyone or anything hold you back from doing your absolute finest. Be brave, aim high and most importantly - make your mark! With love, Marquis Team

Hi Transformers, At Marquis, we love to focus on solving your learning challenges and needs to achieve real results that translate into the final HSC. Sometimes practically and other times with wild, imaginative or even highly unexpected ideas. These ideas are born through education when curiosity meets access to information and nurtured through guidance. That’s why we have a vested interest in, and commitment to, learning in all forms and offering a truly democratic education. It’s also why we’re starting this Marquis Education Blog: a new destination to share our insights and first-class study tips to help you get ahead. Insider Tips from Scholarly Industry Leaders In our blog, you’ll hear straight from our dream team of Academic Head of Subjects, Educators and subject matter experts who are the brightest minds in education, including seasoned PhD qualified industry experts, NESA accredited teachers, English scholars, HSC Markers and 1st in NSW achievers. Together, we have created leading-edge course programs by developing rich content and building innovative technology to deliver this content seamlessly to our students online and in centre blended classrooms. “When designing and developing the Marquis HSC English program, I sought to create an intellectually, creatively, spiritually and poetically enlightening course, which was tethered to my own experience of transformation through education. I drew from my extended marginalia on the search for meaning across literature, art, sociology, philosophy, and the various other tentacles of the human experience.” - Dr Tim Hanna, Head of Content at Marquis Dr Hanna is one of education’s greatest masterminds, and his knowledge of literature and pedagogy propelled him and his profound teaching style to a status many students would only describe as legendary. He is an inspirational Educator with over 20 years of teaching and content, developing experience, and has guided many students to top state ranking and Band 6 success. In our blog, you’ll get to read his breakdown of HSC texts through his engaging analogies and enlightened perspective. Always be Curious One of our goals is to help more students feel engaged and love learning, encourage their curiosity, let them work together, do something new, create things, and always try again. Through our termly English, Maths & UCAT programs and our school holiday programs, Marquis Book Club and Marquis Maths Olympiad, we strive to help students discover the problems they are passionate about solving. Time and time again, our students prove that those of any age can conjure extraordinary solutions. This blog will be a place to hear about our talented young pupils, innovative programs and impassioned Educators. Our blog will also be rich with informative articles and ingenious advice covering English, Maths and UCAT written by our Content Specialists. A Vision Forward for 2030 When we think about the job prospects of 2030, creativity, emotional intelligence, and complex problem solving will be paramount. These are all skills we are dynamically imparting our students with, as each lesson is a cross-pollination between the intellectual and experiential. The renaissance of education is in full force at Marquis, where our teachers of tomorrow engage in each pupil’s artistic, imaginative and critical reasoning endeavours. Our vision is of a new world of learning based on the compelling truth that improving education is the key to the survival of the human race. It’s a world of dreams, inspiration, and ambition informed by evidence and experience. It’s a world where our students become lifelong learners and develop 21st-century skills for a global workplace. It’s a world where innovation is the rule, not the exception. It’s a world where our programs provide a collaborative culture of academic, social and emotional learning and access to new technology. It’s a world where our students, their families, Educators and Head of Subjects, are empowered with a shared vision to offer excellence in education for all. We strongly believe that these three skills are fundamental for our students’ future careers:

“Collaboratively, our Educators are not only committed to laying a strong foundation for HSC success for our students, but they are also dedicated to using literature, imaginative storytelling, problem solving and lateral thinking to expand their scope of what’s possible and consistently engage in each pupil’s artistic, imaginative and intellectual endeavours."

What Differentiates Marquis?

360° Tutoring; Fluid, Flexible and Blended - Online & In-Centre

Marquis Other Tutoring Centres
Results Last year’s cohort has been our strongest yet, with our brightest students receiving All-round Achievers Award (the highest accolade given for achieving band 6 in at least 10 HSC units) as well as scoring a 99+ ATAR. It's difficult to know how accurate many of the results claimed on other tutoring sites are. Some tutoring centres offer scholarships to students who they know will already do well in the HSC to buy results for Marketing purposes. Other tutoring centres don't achieve stellar results year after year, and some refrain from posting their HSC results online. At Marquis we can back all of our claims with data.
Our Founder Our founder knows first-hand the overwhelming nature of academically excelling in high school. She is actively involved in creating the course structure and content, overseeing students’ progress and importantly designing a learning system that encourages students’ transformative journey. This form of involvement is fundamental for ensuring that both parents and students are highly satisfied with the services provided at Marquis. We are not aware of any other tutoring centres, that have been running for 9+ years, where founders are actively and continuously involved in managing their company’s education system.
Student Profiling Our Founder, Abi, meets with every student and family to understand each child’s learning needs. The profiling and discovery of learning needs upon enrolment combined with weekly assessments allow our Educators to create an individualised learning plan to maximise each student’s academic learning goals. We are not aware of any other tutoring centre in Sydney that takes the time to offer this level of personalisation.
Qualified Educators Our Educators and content creators are some of Sydney’s most talented and experienced PhD academics, HSC exam markers, qualified teachers and top ATAR scoring tutors at the top of their field. Limited or no formal teaching experience, unable to explain more complex concepts and ideas to students.
Rich Content All our materials are created by our very own qualified team of educators and academics. As such, our materials provide an exceptional exploration of the NESA syllabus that will help distinguish students from their cohort. We have also compiled a very comprehensive database of resources which assists students in forming a solid understanding of key concepts. Tutoring centres rarely have a qualified content creation team and instead rely on external resources such as textbooks and online materials.
Text Specific Classes We provide text specific classes for our senior grades. Hence students are given access to rich content on their schools’ prescribed texts, examination materials as well as weekly feedback on their school assessment drafts. Tutoring centres rarely provide text specific classes and instead combine materials of a range of texts within their course content. Thus, materials provided for texts are brief and lack detail.
School Specific Classes School specific classes are created for both our junior and senior grades. These classes allow students to collaborate with their peers and, thereby, form a sophisticated understanding of their school materials. The course content will specifically target school syllabus and assessments. Most tutoring centres don’t do school specific classes and those that do only provide it for their senior grades.
Learn Ahead or Revise Our Yearly Success Program is so good it's the gold standard! Our course programs have been designed and written to teach first principles with weekly exam-style homework and end-of-term topic tests by Sydney's most talented and experienced PhD academics, HSC exam markers, and qualified top atar scoring Educators and tutors at the top of their field. Our termly and holiday intensive tutoring programs are the reason why our students consistently top the state every year in the HSC. The majority of tutoring centres do not offer a structured program mapped to the new National Curriculum. Instead, they typically have an ad-hoc approach that doesn’t establish syllabus outcomes or understands the needs of students of a variety of proficiencies.
Small Class Sizes Our termly course programs have been designed and written to teach first principles with weekly exam-style homework and end of term topic tests by Sydney's most talented and experienced PhD academics, HSC exam markers and qualified educators who are at the top of their field. Our termly tutoring programs are the reason why our students consistently top the state every year in the HSC. Size of class has no limit, making it difficult for some students to voice their ideas or receive individualised feedback.
Flexibility - Learn Online or In Centre We strive to deliver accessible education by offering both online and in-centre classes. Both courses continue to deliver the same high-quality teaching, materials, and personal approach. Only offers online or face-to-face courses, rather than the flexibility to choose between both.
One-On-One Private Tutoring Our Individual lessons help support students by providing extra help and attention to their learning, complementary with our termly program. The weekly classes are conducted, with no additional support outside of the regular class times.
Weekly Exam Style Quizzes We give weekly quizzes to our students to ensure that they have a comprehensive understanding of the content covered in previous weeks. It also helps us to track their progress throughout the term. Lack of frequent examination and more focused on just covering theory.
Weekly Homework Help The second half of the lesson is dedicated to tutorial time, where we encourage students to bring in work from school that they need assistance with. Other courses only focus on the tutoring material, with less emphasis and attention for personal help.
Essay Marking & Feedback Students are required by their educators to submit parts of their essays on a weekly basis. These essay responses will be marked and returned with quality feedback, allowing students to consistently work on improving their essay writing skills. Other tutoring centres don’t give weekly feedback on essays, and this is especially lacking for junior grades.
Assessment Support We strongly encourage students to submit weekly drafts of their school assessments to our Marquis online portal. Educators will mark according to the HSC guidelines and will provide sufficient amount of feedback. Our aim is to have students walk into their exams with great confidence and advanced knowledge of exam content. More focused on giving feedback for tutoring homework rather than school assessments
Weekly Progress Reporting Results from homework submissions, quizzes, and topic tests are recorded in order to monitor students' progress and improvement. Lack of a tracking process so that improvements cannot be measured.
Realtime Student Feedback Students can contact their teachers via Marquis online portal throughout the week. They can submit their school homework, assessment drafts as well as any other materials that they need additional assistance with. Educators will provide quality feedback and direction for future steps to further strengthen the quality of their work. Other tutoring centres only limit student and educator interaction to 1-2 hours of class time. As such, students are not given sufficient time and feedback to make great progress.
Secure Online Student Portal The Marquis online portal provides access to extra resources, sample responses and past papers, as well as being a discussion forum and platform for 24/7 support in a blended learning environment. Limited or no access to extra support or resources outside of class.
Rich Resources & Past Papers Our Marquis database consists of rich prescribed text resources, scholarly articles, exemplar essays as well as multiple past papers with sample responses from Selective, Private and Independent schools. Limited materials that lack variety and quality.
Weekly HSC Exam Style Quizzes We provide weekly quizzes that involve a range of questions, closely following the HSC format. These quizzes will be conducted under strict time conditions and will be marked according to the HSC marking criteria. Sample responses will be provided with a structural breakdown. No HSC style weekly quizzes, hence, students are not given time to adequately prepare for future Y12 examinations.
Exam Excellence Preparation Our exam excellence prep course consists of 6 HSC module exams and 6 exam revisions. All exams will be conducted under strict HSC style exam conditions and will be marked by our experienced HSC educators. We are yet to see a tutoring centre that has an exam prep course where students are trained to confidently tackle HSC examinations.
School Holiday Workshops & Intensives We offer intensive or revision-based school holiday workshops throughout the year, providing students with the opportunity to extend knowledge in core subjects that will help you learn at your pace. The school holidays are the perfect time to help you get ahead of your peers, reduce stress for next term’s assessments and secure a huge boost in your marks and overall confidence. The school holiday bootcamps and intensive workshops are rarely provided at other tutoring centres and this stifles pupils with an opportunity to revise the subject matter they are struggling with, or cover key concepts you need to ace next term’s exams.
UCAT Theory & Exam Intensives Our UCAT course consists of techniques and skills needed for each subset, computerised mock exams and exam reviews providing personalised feedback. Failure to equip students with the necessary techniques to ace each subset and no personalised feedback and reviews for UCAT mock exams.
We Genuinely Care We are highly engaged in the students’ transformative journey while ensuring that they are both emotionally and mentally supported. The student services team and educators are always there to assist with any concerns and will tailor services to suit any educational needs. Less attentive to students and parents’ needs, thus, failing to monitor individual experience of each student.
